15 Features to Look For in Themes For Blogs

By Panah C Rad

Buying a WordPress theme is more than choosing the first attractive theme that you see on the Internet. Depending on the type of blog that you want to host, you'll need to buy a theme that allows you the best chance to present your information and enhance your work in the future. Your goal is to have a design that helps your visitors find what they are looking for fast without having to spend hours using your search feature. Not only that, you want your pages to load up fast. And it doesn't hurt to be found by search engines.

If you plan to start your website or make an upgrade, you want to get a theme that not only looks attractive but helps your website grow as well. Here are some of the features that you need to look for in a premium WP theme:

  • Option pages: having the ability to make changes easily from the back-end is a big plus.
  • Thumbnails: many top templates support them.
  • Files: you want to make sure you get the Photoshop for your design in case you want to make changes later.
  • Valid XHTML + CSS: a plus as it saves you time.
  • Lightweight design: having bells and whistles on your template is great, but you want a site that is lightweight not cute.
  • WordPress N compatible: you want your code to be compatible with the latest WP release.
  • Color schemes: being able to choose among multiple color options is a big plus.
  • Threaded Comments: a new WP feature that brings more interactivity to your site. Make sure your site can handle it.
  • Layouts: having multiple pre-designed layouts can help you customize your weblog fast.
  • Gravatar: needs to be supported on weblogs these days.
  • Browser compatible: not everyone uses IE to visit your web-site. Make sure you support all popular browsers
  • Advertisement Ready: this is a must have if you want to monetize your weblog.
  • Mobile: if you want your visitors to be able to reach you on their mobile phones, you need this feature.
  • Video ready: if you want to host videos on your site, you are going to need this feature.
  • SEO ready: who doesn't like getting free traffic from search engines?

There you have it. Not all WP-themes come with all the above features, but it's up to you to figure out which of the above factors are important to you the most (depending on the type of your website).

WordPress Blogging - How to Optimize Your Blog Post Title

By Anne Abelman

The whole point of having a blog is so that you can bring information in an easily digestible form to the people who are looking for it.

Bloggers want other people to read what they have written or posted. To get people to read your blog you need to get traffic to your blog and one of the best ways to get traffic is with your title.

Blogging Tips - How to Optimize Your Title in 6 Easy Steps

Blog Tip Number 1 - Use Your Keywords Up Front

Keywords are the words that you use to describe your niche and they are also the words that people use to search for information. When Google or any of the other search engines go looking for information they look at the first few words of your title. If your post title says something like "the 7 essential elements of..." then the search engine spider will go somewhere else to find the keyword or keyphrase that it's looking for.

Experienced Bloggers know not to waste the first few words of the blog title, so use your keywords up front.

Blog Tip Number 2 - Length Counts

In the word of offline book publishing brevity is king. A catchy, single word title is easy to remember and will sell more units.

But in the internet world things are very different. In the online world, the longer the title the better. A longer title gives the search engine spiders more words to find, so if you want your blog post to be more easily found then make your blog post tile keyword rich.

Blog Tip Number 3 - Emphasize the Benefits

A benefit is what something does. A feature is what something is. Always use benefits in your blog post title rather than features. An example of a blog post title that emphasizes the benefits is:"Blog Post Titles - How to Optimize Your Blog Title to Bring More Traffic to Your Blog"

An example of a features title would be "Blog Post Titles - 6 Ways to Optimize Your Title".

Blog Tip Number 4 - Use your Keywords Again

If you have a longer title you have the chance to use your keywords again and the more keywords you have in your title the more chance the search engine spiders have of finding a keyword.

Blog Tip Number 5 - Asking Questions is Effective

If you ask a compelling question like - Do you know how to avoid the 3 most common mistakes of blog posting? Your reader thinks to himself I'm not sure what those 3 mistakes are and before they even realize it they have started reading your post.

Blog Tip Number 6 - End Your Title with a Keyword If You Can

If you can naturally put one of your keywords at the end of your title then do so. The search engine spiders are more likely to find keywords if they are at the beginning of your title or at the end.

These 6 blogging tips will help you bring more traffic to your blog post.

How to Make Money - Turn Your Blog Into a Success

By Delano Lightbourne

One of the most popular ways to make money online these days is with blogging. So many people start them with the intent to make them riveting and informative. This does not happen for many bloggers because they do not know how to make money with blogging. There are steps each person must take if they want a successful blog. The most important step is to keep at it. You cannot start a blog, never post anything else, and assume it will be the place people will go every day to read. The best way to do this is to follow a posting schedule. Most people do either daily or once a week.

Another tip people can use if they are wondering how to make money with a blog is to write about what they know. The main reason most people use the Internet is for information. If you write about what you know or what you have done before, people will find this interesting because it is useful to them. They will be able to depend on your posts, which in turn will make it easier to sell them. You would not have this credibility as a blogger if you posted about everything. People would realize you do not know everything about everything, so they would find more reliable information elsewhere.

Another how to make money tip for bloggers is to post on other sites that are relevant to your own. This will attract other readers, who you hope will turn into customers. In order for this to work, you have to make sure your posts make sense and simply are not posted to be posted. There is no way you will attract readers with a run of the mill response. Another tip people can use to make a successful blog is to have a good design. This does not have to be expensive, just one that looks put together.

One of the most important steps people with a blog can do is to market their blog. Anyone interested in how to make money needs to market and promote whatever they want to make money with. Posting is an easy way to market your blog, but you should use other ways as well. Using keywords is a great way to do this. If you do not market your blog at all, no one will be able to find it, which means you will not be able to sell your product.

Blogging Your Way to a Great Living

By C. Taylor Brown

Blogging is steadily growing as a popular passtime and has become a very lucrative business for many people; this even includes many people who would not have considered writing for a career because they didn't think they could write. I think any writer would love their own forum, to write whatever they please and make good money at it. As one of those people, who would love to stay at home and write about whatever I wanted, I have gathered some great ideas for building a successful career in blogging.

1. Getting a blog is the easy part, but finding something to write about is another ballgame. The key to successful blogs, is successful bloggers don't run dry of things to write about. The secret: they are writing about things they are interested in. Find one or two topics your knowledgeable about and run with it. Write on a daily basis, and you will get very good at what you do.

2. After you've gotten your blog set up, add Google AdSense to your site to make money. Google AdSense will pay you every time someone clicks on one of the ads on your blog. AdSense is so advanced it even adapts it's ads to the content your write about. Keep that in mind as you write.

3. Once you've got things up and running, you want to test your material out. Start by advertising your blog to the people who love you most. Share your blog with family and friends, and then ask for good feedback on what your writing about. By doing this, you will get a better idea of what you need to change to make your blog more appealing. You can also get a better sense of what your strengths are. From here, you will want to figure out who your audience will be and start writing to them.

4. After you have told people you know about your blog, reach out to the blogging community. Join several blogging forums, and get free advertising to your blog. Also, get additional, constructive feedback from those people who are already established in the blogging realm. After you start making blogging friends, you can review their blogs on your site, while they review yours on theirs; this is a great way to get free advertising. You may also make some good friendships along the way.

5. In addition to blog reviews, check out other blogs on a regular basis and post constructive comments at the end of the articles you read. This will be appreciated by other bloggers and will continue to get your name and ideas out in the blogging world. By reading other blogs you will also get a better sense of what works and what doesn't. Look for inspiration from other blogs as you are checking them out.

6. Once your blog is established, there is also paid advertising available for bloggers. This can be expensive, but potentially helpful for your blog.

Don't waste your time reading anymore books on how to be a successful blogger; go out and learn from the best bloggers on the net. You will learn about what it takes to be successful. As far as I can tell, successful blogging is the same as any other successful business; you have to work hard, and have a little bit of luck. If you have fun in the meantime, it will be worth all of your effort. Now get to work!

Are Closing Paragraphs Needed For Blogs?

By Greg Manning

When it comes to blogging there really are no rules. More like guidelines that allow you a direction when getting started. Everyone who does it has adapted their own preferences and does things their own way. It is one of the things that make blogging so appealing to the masses, it is easy and there are pretty much no rules.

The problem with all of that is when you have a question. You can go look at sites like problogger or copyblogger but they give their opinion but does that mean anything. I mean everyone it seems has an opinion it is just a matter of what your preferences are.

My dilemma today is closing paragraphs. Do you add them? Are they important? Or are they generally frowned upon? Most people only spend about a minute looking at a blog anyhow so why make the post longer just to tie it all together.

Writing in just about any other genre requires you to have a closing paragraph or statement. If you are writing an article for a paper or a report for someone you always tie up loose ends and include a well thought out closing. But blogging is different. Even when I read blogs I am not sure how many closing paragraphs I actually see or read. Probably not many but I have never really taken notice.

But the more I get into blogging the more I wonder which way is preferred. So far most of my posts have closings; it's just what I have always done so I have continued to do so. But the more I think about it and the more I realize that quick posts are read more in their entirety than long posts I wonder if I should continue with a closing.

What do you think? Are closings important to blogging or relatively useless? Do you include a closing paragraph, statement, or question when you write?

Are You Ready to Make Money With Your Blog? 3 Ways to Collect Revenue

By Christopher Morris

Seems like everyone is getting into the blog writing game. It can be a lot of fun. Some people simply like to write about their hobby. Others do it to bring attention to their business offerings. Whatever your motivation you will at some point want to monetize your blog. Once you learn how to start a blog, start writing good content, and gain visitors, you will be able to make some money.

There are many ways to make money blogging. You can sell advertisements. You can join an affiliate program and collect a commission on products you recommend and your readers purchase. You can sell your own products. Just about any method you can think of is available to you for making money blogging.

The following are but a few of the options available to a blogger for making money from their writing and content. Not all are worthwhile for every blog. If you are writing a political blog posting Google Adsense advertisements may not work as well as getting a commission from selling political books.

1. Earn using Google Adsense. What was once just a search engine is now among the most powerful enterprises throughout the world, not only in terms of its reach, but also in terms of its income generating possibilities. You can earn from Google by using their free service known as AdSense. All you need to do is have a blog and allow space on your page for ads to be displayed by AdSense. The service would then allow you to display ad units that would display advertisements related to the topics you write about in your blog.

So how does Adsense work? Let's say you have blog about golf and posted an article about ladies golf clubs. The ad unit would hopefully display ads about ladies golf clubs or at the least, golf clubs. Each time a visitor clicks on any of these ads, you would share in the revenue with Google. How much is really a guess but most people figure it is around 25% of the total revenue.

2. Affiliate Commissions. A lot of online businesses offer affiliate programs. These work by you having their ads posted on your blog. When a visitor clicks the ad and then purchases something from that company, you would then receive a commission or a referral fee. Companies such as Wal-Mart and Amazon.com among many, many other run such affiliate programs. Amazon.com runs their own affiliate program in house. Zappos.com, an online shoe store, has Commission Junction administer their affiliate program. Their are numerous affiliate programs with thousands of companies products to sell at CJ, Shareasale, Linkshare among others.

3. Sell Advertising. If you want more control over your ad space than what Adsense will give you then sell you own ads to companies Some companies will look for blogs that match their products and services and rent ad space. Sort of like using a billboard. You ad space can then be leased for a certain period of time. The only caveat is that you will need to show the company that you get enough visitors to make it worth their while.

The means to make money from blogging are many and quite easy to implement. The difficulty is actually marketing your blog so visitors will buy the products you are offering.

Learn how to start a blog then make money. That is the holy grail of making money online. Learn to write political blogs with conservative views

Supernovas Blast Out Hugely Powerful Cosmic Rays

Friday, June 26, 2009
By Clara Moskowitz

As astronomers have long expected, exploding stars called supernovas can accelerate particles up to almost the speed of light, a new study shows.

The discovery helps explain where the extremely energetic cosmic rays we find near Earth come from.

Cosmic rays are charged particles, mostly protons, that come swooping through space from beyond the solar system. They carry such an energetic punch they can knock out electronics systems on Earth if they manage to make it past our atmosphere.

Until now, scientists couldn't be sure how cosmic rays acquire their energy and speed.

"It has long been thought that the super-accelerators that produce these cosmic rays in the Milky Way are the expanding envelopes created by exploded stars, but our observations reveal the smoking gun that proves it," said Eveline Helder of the Astronomical Institute Utrecht of Utrecht University in the Netherlands, leader of the new study.

Nearby Star May Be Getting Ready to Explode

Wednesday, June 10, 2009

Bye-bye, Betelgeuse?

The nearby, well-known and very bright star may soon explode in a supernova, according to data released by U.C. Berkeley researchers Tuesday.

The red giant Betelgeuse, once so large it would reach out to Jupiter's orbit if placed in our own solar system, has shrunk by 15 percent over the past decade in a half, although it's just as bright as it's ever been.

"To see this change is very striking," said retired Berkeley physics professor Charles Townes, who won the 1964 Nobel Prize for inventing the laser. "We will be watching it carefully over the next few years to see if it will keep contracting or will go back up in size."

Betelgeuse, whose name derives>>>
